Sanitary Sewer Back-up

Homeowners Responsibility Sewer

Generally, when your sewer line is backed up, it is the homeowner’s responsibility. The most common cause is tree roots getting into the joints of your service line (lateral). The majority of laterals in the town are made of clay pipe, over the years they can shift or collapse and cause openings for any trees planted near them. Blockages can also be caused by dips or sags in the line.

The Town of Hebron has cleaned, inspected and videoed all of our sanitary sewer main lines which are made of clay pipe. If you suspect that the blockage is in the town’s main line call the town hall at 219-996-4641. If the problem is the town’s sewer main, the town will correct the problem as soon as possible. If the problem is your service line, staff will advise you to contact a sewer service company.

The Wastewater Department encourages you to replace your clay service line with PVC. A sanitary sewer clean out is required by code, an outside clean out will make clearing your service line easier and more sanitary.
